Index About Wardija

The Wardija ridge spans from Ghajn Tuffieha to St. Paul's Bay and is the residential preserve of the upper-class Maltese. It is sparsely populated and an excellent place to walk around. The scenery is panoramic. The small rural village which is a treasure of serenity on the north western hillside of  the tiny hamlet of Wardija, which in itself is one of Malta’s best kept secrets, offers generous spacious living for couples, families and groups of  friends in a warm relaxing holiday atmosphere. Here one can unwind and be totally at ease with nature like nowhere else. Built in attractive local limestone  with a charm all of its own, the Wardija Hilltop Village enjoys commanding and spectacular views of the picturesque green valley beneath and the blue Mediterranean sea on both sides of the Island beyond. The panoramic view of  the Island of St Paul, where the saint was shipwrecked en route to Rome in 0058 AD lies to the north east  of Malta whilst to the north west, the vista is of open seas with the Calypso Isle of Gozo in the distance.

Attractions near Wardija:

ANCHOR BAY - This was the prettiest and smallest bay in Malta until 1979 when the director Robert Altman re-created sweethaven here for 'Popeye The Movie'.

FOMM IR RIH - This is an inaccessible bay, one of the most beautiful and the last remaining undeveloped bay in Malta. There is good snorkelling and diving as well as beautiful cliffs and valleys.

GOLDEN BAY - Locally known as GHAJN TUFFIEHA. A headland separates the two popular sandy beaches of Ghajn Tuffieha (Apple's Eye) and ir Ramla tal Mizquqa, otherwise known as GOLDEN BAY.

MELLIEHA - Mellieha is a craggy and picturesque hilltop town with bewitching cave dwellings and houses that cling to the rock face. It has a comparatively modern street plan. The village was built on top of the Mellieha ridge as one of the 10 original parishes of 1436 and was entirely depopulated within 100 years.

ST. PAUL'S BAY - At the turn of the century, St Paul's Bay was a small fishing village, but in the last 20 years it has grown into a major tourist center.
